Despite all the frustrating drawbacks during the creation process, having the final product and selling it to a happy customer makes it worthwhile. – Rachel Ann Jones, Pthalo Azul
Pthalo Azul is Rachel’s favorite color of blue paint, paired with the Spanish word for blue. It’s the deepest, bluest, blue imaginable and she uses it in her designs as much as possible. She is both an illustrator and writer. She also creates acrylic laser-cut silhouettes inspired by the Victorian and Art Nouveau eras.
Where do your draw your inspiration?
Other than the color blue–which inspires me very much–A lot of my inspiration, especially for my shop, comes from the Victorian period. I like to keep references of Art Nouveau and Victorian patterns near me when I’m feeling un-inspired. Going to museums or taking hikes and drawing/painting the landscape also gets my brain working so I can sketch ideas and take that to my final pieces. I also get a lot of inspiration from walking around the city and sketching the people I see, listening to the street performers, and overhearing coffee shop conversations; there’s a whole out there full of stories and spectacles that come through in my art.
What makes your shop unique?
I have a lot of acrylic pieces that are huge. Most of the laser cuts are for very small brooches, but I have several pieces that are meant to be home decor silhouettes, and will look really great either indoor or outdoor. While the biggest one I have is about 12 inches, I would love to stretch that even bigger in the future, so you have not only a pretty piece of laser-cut, but fine art that you can’t buy from just any store.
How do you advertise your shop?
I advertise my shop by applying to features (like this one) on other blogs and using my own blog, my twitter, and through word of mouth through people I know. I’ve bought advertisement space before on popular blogs and that was also helpful.
What’s next for you and your business?
Right now I’m starting my own little website for Pthalo Azul (I’m actually doing a little how-to series on my blog on making a website from scratch) so that way I can put in magazine-like spreads and a more personalized touch as a supplement to the Etsy shop I already have. It’s going to be very fun when I finish it.
